Widespread Strike Paralyzes City as Troops Are Rushed in (Universal Newsreel, Jul 1934)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. WIDESPREAD STRIKE PARALYZES CITY AS TROOPS ARE RUSHED IN: SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Huge crowds riot for food before grocery and butcher shops as a general union strike threatens an acute shortage of provisions. Troops, with artillery, are rushed into the area as longshoremen’s strike spreads to affiliated unions, tying up transportation and virtually bringing industry to a standstill. 2. PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT PASSES THROUGH CANAL ON WAY TO HAWAII: CRISTOBAL, CANAL ZONE - Aboard the cruiser “Houston,” President Roosevelt takes the salute of assembled troops as he passes through the great Panama Canal on his vacation cruise. Harmodio Arias, President of Panama, greets him, in a brief visit as the Navy ship noses towards the Pacific. 3. 8 DEAD, SCORES HURT IN RIOTS: AMSTERDAM, HOLLAND - Demanding a restoration of dole cuts, unemployed are shot down by troops in wide-spread disorders. The reduction of the government’s payment to jobless families precipitated the demonstrations that filled the city’s hospitals to capacity. 4. ANTIQUE AUTOS IN TRACK CLASSIC: CHICAGO, IL - Thirteen laboring “horseless carriages” of 1900 vintage hit up to the tune of ten (or maybe even twelve) miles-an-hour to smash all existing speed records on the World’s Fair track. Barney Oldfield drives his No. 13 (30-year-old) across the line first. 5. DOLLFUSS GREETS LAEMMLE: VIENNA, AUSTRIA - Chancellor Englebert Dollfuss extends his country’s warm welcome to Carl Laemmle, President of Universal Pictures Corporation now studying film conditions in Europe. The meeting takes place in the building where the Congress of Vienna was held in 1815. 6. ROUND UP BIG BUFFALO HERD: CUSTER STATE PARK, SD - Another Vanishing American, the buffalo, comes in the spotlight again as a pack of 150 is rounded up for annual inspection. From the vicious bulls to the bawling calves they are examined before being turned loose. 7. IL DUCE TURNS FARMER FOR DAY: LITTORIA, ITALY - Premier Mussolini lends a hand in harvesting the first wheat to be grown in the reclaimed Pontine Marshes. A vast waste until reclamation started two years ago, this area yields a big harvest to workmen led by the Premier, who puts in a full morning threshing grain. 8. NAVY PREPARES FOR FLIGHT: SAN DIEGO, CA - Officers and men of two patrol squadrons go through final tests in preparations for a mass hop to Alaska and return. Twelve planes of the PN-1 type are to make the northern survey trip to gather valuable aeronautical data. 9. CAVALCADE TRIUMPHS AGAIN: CHICAGO, IL - With the last minute charge that has won him title after title, Cavalcade wins the sixth running of the $40,000 Arlington Classic before the largest crowd to pack the track in recent years. This victory places him among the greatest horses of all time. (LOCAL – CHICAGO) $500,000 LOST IN CYCLONE. (LOCAL – NEW JERSEY) WARNER BROS. DONATE FREE MOVIES TO 900 ORPHANS.
