Assassination Described (Universal Newsreel, Sep 1935)
Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. ASSASSINATION DESCRIBED: BATON ROUGE, LA - An eyewitness to the death of Huey Long gives a vivid word-picture of the shooting and the death of Carl Weiss, the assassin, under the guns of the “dictator’s” bodyguard. Meanwhile the murderer, who was mowed down by sixty-one slugs, has an immediate burial. 2. RADIO PLAYS WATCH-DOG: SCHENECTADY, NY - Little Jean knows when it’s time for supper in the most modern manners. Eugene S. Darlington, her father, has rigged a short-wave receiving set to her play wagon and when the time comes for Jean to come home he “calls all cars.” 3. MARK DISASTER ANNIVERSARY: OFF ASBURY PARK, NJ - Survivors of the holocaust when the Morro Castle burned at sea, mark the first anniversary of the disaster with ceremonies at the scene, eight miles off the coast. Wreaths thrown upon the waters are solemn tribute to the 137 victims. 4. SLUM RAZING IS PUSHED: DETROIT, MI - The eradication of ancient, disease-ridden slums by government works drives gains added impetus in Detroit with Mrs. Roosevelt assisting in the ceremonies as the first house is demolished. Model homes will replace the old structures. 5. DISPLAY FUR BATHING SUITS: PENDOREILLE LAKE, ID – What will undoubtedly not prove to be the latest for sea-side sirens is displayed by a bevy of beauties. The suits may be fine for sun-bathing, but their practicability ends there—definitely. 6. ENSHRINE HUGE LANTERNS: MIKAWA, JAPAN - Two gigantic lanterns, designed to frighten away evil spirits, are installed by the natives with colorful ceremonies. Thirty-three feet high and nineteen feet in diameter, they’re the daddies of all festive lamps. 7. PUP BLUEBLOODS PARADE: ALAMEDA, CA - The aristocrats of dogdom, the cream of their snooty set, display their wares at the Oakland Kennel Club Show, classic competition for the champion canines of West Coast dog circles. 8. ENGINES CRASH HEAD-ON: GRESHAM, OR - Two speeding locomotives meet head-on in a thrilling crack-up at the Multnomah Fair. Speeding to their fate it’s a case of irresistible force meeting the immovable body—with results that thrill the ten thousand spectators assembled. 9. FOOTBALL’S ON THE WAY: SOUTH BEND, IN - Notre Dame’s “Fighting Irish” squad of pigskin punishers comes out in full force, harbinger of the nation’s fall sport. With 85 men on the squad, Notre Dame has hopes of recovering the prestige of the days of Knute Rockne, most famed coach of all time. 10. LORD’S CHILLUN BAPTIZED: CHARLOTTE, NC - Six hundred Negro converts “go down to the waters” in a wholesale baptismal ceremony in a river. With hosannas and screams galore they are immersed bodily, washing away their sins in the stream’s waters. 11. BIG GUNS ROAR ONCE MORE: FORT STORY, VA - Uncle Sam’s Coastal Defense guns, the largest of their kind, find their voice again after ten years of disuse. Owing to the great cost of firing, $350 per shell, they have been laying idle until these tests of a new powder.
