WHOPPER COPS COAST CLOSER: ARCADIA, CA - Fifty-eight thousand fans see Hal Price Headley’s entry gallop to a triumph over Tick On and Ariel Cross in the $10,000 added San Juan Capistrano Handicap, last day-feature of the season at Santa Anita. 2A/B/C. FLOODS SWAMP EASTERN AREAS NAPOLEON: NAPOLEON, OH - Terrific ice gorges choke the Maumee River, spreading watery desolation far and wide. Huge cakes are spectacularly left by receding floods.—MARYLAND AND WEST VIRGINIA highways, under many feet of water, bring traffic almost to a standstill.—DUNCANNON, PA - A twelve-foot ice blockade forces the water up, wrecking railroad trestles and de-railing trains. 3. GAL RASSLERS BAR NAIL-HOLD: STUART, FL - Scratching and hair-pulling are ruled out as Clara meets Gloria in a mat bout that’s a lot livelier than the puff-and-grunt exhibitions put on by many a bleating behemoth of the professional wrestling world. Even the referee takes a fall. 4. KING IN FIRST APPEARANCE: LONDON, ENGLAND - Edward VIII visits the renowned British Industries Fair, “Shop Window of the Empire,” in the fulfillment of his first public engagement. Throngs cheer the new sovereign as he examines the many exhibits. 5. MAN RAISES CHICK IN BOTTLE: DENVER, CO - Popped into a five-gallon glass container a day after cracking its shell, a chicken grows up hale and healthy. Now half-grown, it is fated for imprisonment in its transparent cage until somebody breaks the bottle. 6. SNOW BURIES NIPPONESE CITY: TAKATA, JAPAN - A historic old community is cut off from the world for ten days as twenty-foot drifts halt trains. Two-story houses are covered to their eaves and inhabitants forced to dig tunnels through the snow in order to cross streets. 7. DUST SUFFOCATES SOUTHWEST: TX & OK - Farmlands parch under a black pall of dust for the third successive year as a fifty-five mile wind hurls the choking sand over homes and fields, killing vegetation and blotting out the light of the sun. 8. FAMILY ‘PUTS UP’ PET HORSE: LOS ANGELES, CA - Tuffie’s a draft horse, although a midget, but he dines with his owner and the folks and sleeps in a regular bed. His master kisses him good-night and tucks the equine posterior carefully under the covers. 9. GOLDEN GLOVERS WHALE AWAY: NEW YORK CITY - They may be amateurs, but these contenders for fistic eminence certainly pack plenty of wallop. Knockouts are frequent as left hooks connect, and the canvas cradles the bruised ambitions of many a contestant. (LOCAL – DETROIT) CHAMPION TIGERS HARD AT IT. (LOCAL – CHICAGO) GIRL JAILERS ROUND UP MEN.
