Description

The original release sheet reads: (SPECIAL A/B) 426 CHILDREN BLASTED TO DEATH AS TEXAS SCHOOL EXPLODES / MASS FUNERALS CAST BLACK PALL OF SORROW OVER WIDESPREAD OIL DISTRICT (Pre-Released: Shipped Special to all Accounts): NEW LONDON, TX - A terrific explosion of natural gas tears the roof from the big Consolidated Grade and High School, toppling walls, beams and debris on the heads of hundreds of pupils. Scores are blown to bits and others crushed to death under the devastating mass of falling masonry—only ten minutes before all of them would have left the doomed building for the day. Feverish rescue work through the dark hours of the night produces a mounting horror as the staggering toll of the awful catastrophe is realized. Nearly every home in the community is touched by the tragedy, a disaster caused by the seepage of healing gas through the hollow walls of the structure. / VICTIMS LAID TO REST: GRUESOME RANKS OF COFFINS hold the mutilated bodies of four hundred twenty-six boys and girls as the grief-stricken community buries its dead. Mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, numbed into grim silence by the magnitude of their sorrow, wait in long lines at the churches, wait their turn for the few, brief moments of a funeral service that marks a last farewell to their loved ones.
