Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. ZEP HINDENBURG CRASHES IN FLAMES (Pre-Released: Air Expressed to All Accounts): LAKEHURST, NJ - Thirty-five persons die and scores of others are injured as the mighty dirigible explodes three hundred feet over the landing field at the end of her first voyage of the season from Europe. A terrific burst of flame engulfs the stern of the ship and spreads with the rapidity of lightning to the bow. The inferno of blazing hydrogen gas cremates all living beings in its path, as the twisted skeleton of the balloon settles quickly to the ground. Rescue crews brave death to save sixty-three persons, some of them horribly burned. 2. SURVIVORS BATTLE INJURIES TO LIVE: LAKEHURST, NJ - Mutilated passengers and members of the ill-fated Hindenburg’s crew are placed in speedy ambulances for transport to hospitals all over the region. Many survivors are in critical condition, and doctors rush every known remedy in efforts to bring relief for their suffering. Several persons make miraculous escapes from the blazing ship. The dirigible lies upon the field, a twisted, useless mass of smoke-blackened girders, as the United States Department of Commerce launches an inquiry to determine the cause of the disaster. 3. HOTEL “GUESTS” GO TO WORK: SAN FRANCISCO, CA - A lot of traveling men learn to make beds for the first time, as employees of the Palace and other hotels go on strike. The manager trucks heavy trunks, but the customers staying in the hostelries do their own work—or do without. 4. F.D.R. BATTLES BIG TARPON: PORT ARANSAS, TX - The President lands a 77-pound tarpon after a struggle that lasts nearly an hour and a half. The big fish is over five feet long, but finally succumbs to the Chief Executive’s skill with the reel and line. 5. DICK MERRILL SPANS OCEAN: NEW YORK CITY - Taking off on his second flight across the Atlantic, Dick Merrill carries Jack Lambie along as co-pilot. Twenty hours later, word is flashed back that the intrepid aeronauts have landed in England with a new record for the crossing. 6. WAR ADMIRAL CAPTURES DERBY: CHURCHILL DOWNS, KY - Taking an early lead and keeping it all the way, gallant War Admiral triumphs in the 63d running of the classic Kentucky Derby. Pompoon and Reaping Reward finish second and third, after valiant efforts to overtake the leader. (LOCAL – WASHINGTON D.C.) SHENANDOAH HOLD CORONATION FETE FOR APPLE QUEEN.
