Train Crashes Into Street (Universal Newsreel, Dec 1937)
Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. TRAIN CRASHES INTO STREET: PITTSBURGH, PA - A 200-ton locomotive and six coaches crash from raised tracks into Carson Street, killing the engineer and fireman and causing an auto accident as motorists try to duck the hurtling monster. A boulder, dropped to the tracks from a hillside, derailed the train. 2. PRESIDENT CELEBRATES XMAS: WASHINGTON, D.C. - President Roosevelt and members of his family mark Christmas with the traditional tree, set up with its gay trappings at the White House. The Chief Executive throws the switch that turns on the lights. 3. GIRL SWIMMER NAMED COLONEL: FT. LAUDERDALE, FL - The “Kentucky Colonel” idea spreads Southward. Katherine Rawls, ace swimmer and diving star, is presented with a commission and a handsome dress sword emblematic of her new rank as a “Colonel.” The lady officer shows off her aquatic prowess. 4. ITALY MAKES WOOL FROM MILK: ROME, ITALY - A scarcity of raw materials sends the country scurrying to the scientists. A process is discovered that will turn milk into wool that may be used for all fabric purposes. The startling transformation is made by means of chemicals. 5. NEW COMBO RHUMBA IS SHIVERY: MIAMI, FL - Both Cuba and Puerto Rico contribute to the latest rhumba wriggle. It’s a combination dance introduced at the Miami-Biltmore by Ramon and Renita, famed exponents of tropical rhythms. 6. HUGE FLAMES TOP OIL WELL: EL SEGUNDO, CA - Two-hundred-foot flames burst from an oil well as gas becomes ignited, destroying $100,000 worth of equipment and defying the efforts of firemen in special asbestos suits. The spectacular fire consumes 70,000,000 cubic feet of gas a day. 7. CUTIE COPS CROQUET CROWN: MIAMI, FL - (Exclusive) The costumes for the mild, old garden game of croquet undergo plenty of modification as the beach Lovelies play a match. Abbreviated swimsuits show little or no resemblance to the hemstitched tent that grandma wore when she was young and pretty. 8. NOW BADMINTON IS THE RAGE: NEW YORK CITY - Badminton, in case you didn’t remember, is a form of indoor tennis played with a high net and a feathered “ball.” When two professionals play at the Hippodrome, there’s plenty of speed and action. The feathered missile is tricky, too. 9. “HE DID” WINS HOLIDAY STAKES: LOS ANGELES, CA - Santa Anita track opens its season to a record crowd that thrills as He Did romps home in the $5,000 Christmas Handicap. Fifty thousand people fill the stands and wager nearly $600,000 on the races.
