Description

The original catalog description provided by the Ford Motor Company reads as follows: a. Hawaiian village on beach with mountain in background - railroad tracks through narrow gorge. “Hakalau Bridge…” “The Islands abound in a rich tropical growth while many strange plants greet the eye of the tourist, wild ginger, the hihua [shinglewood], the mango and wild ferns abound luxuriously.” Tourists examine plant life - automobiles drive along road with tropical foliage. [1916] b. “Honolii Falls…” “Pee-Pee Falls and Boiling Pots.” [1916] c. Sky-line, business district. “Down on the levee.” Riverboats on river, wharves, docks - children play with pigeons in park. “Memphis is one of the largest mule markets in the South.” Mule market - park scenes. “The Harahan Bridge. One of the four great bridges of the world…” [1917] d. Swimmer performs native dance on beach while surf riders hold surfboards in background - surfboard riders enter water, paddle boards away from shore. “Selecting the proper kind of wave, the surf rider gets his board under way by paddling furiously with his hands and feet. At the proper moment, mounting a huge wave, he throws himself on the board as it is seized by the force of the onrushing water.” “Occasionally however, despite the swimmer’s skill, a mighty wave upsets his calculations as well as his equilibrium and he is plunged head-long into the foaming sea.” [1917] e. “Atlantic City is probably the world’s greatest pleasure resort. Situated on an island ten miles in length, seven miles from the mainland, its climate is tempered by the Gulf Stream in winter and cooled in summer by southwest breezes from the Atlantic.” View overlooking the Atlantic City business district. [1917] f. Boy places strings on ukulele, hammers in pegs, glues parts, holds up finished product - frame of ukulele is assembled, face attached, glued, fastened with cord, clamped in place, wood trimmed with chisel. [1917]
