Canada's Mountain of Tears: Mount Edith Cavell / Going Up Mountains: Mount Hood, Oregon Part 1

Description

The original catalog description provided by the Ford Motor Company reads as follows: a. “And so in honor of Edith Cavell and the great work she so nobly accomplished, the Dominion of Canada has named for her a majestic mountain -- Mount Edith Cavell.” “It is not an easy journey to Mount Edith Cavell for no smooth roadway, except for a few short miles, leads to the summit -- so with guides and pack horses we’re off.” “The first leg of our journey lay among the foothills and across the little rivers born in the glaciers hard by.” “I chatter, chatter as I flow, To join the brimming river. For men may come and men may go, But I go on forever.” “Our first day’s hike led us fairly well into the night, so we pitched our camp by the light of the moon and turned in on a bed of firs.” “Bright and early we were astir and packed our pots and kettles for a hard day’s climb lay ahead.” “Throwin’ a ‘diamond hitch’ -- the pack horse blows up his stomach and holds his breath while the hitch is being made -- wise old horse he doesn’t believe in tight lacing.” Party climbing mountain side on horseback - glacier. “Crossing the ice plateau at the foot of the glacier.” Party now afoot. “Up the glacier we went in a punctuated journey of slips and slides.” [1920] b. Party eating around open fire on ice - water running from under ice - Ford bucks its way through snow to mountain lodge. “And early next morning when the shadows were long we began the real hike to the summit of Mt. Hood.” Party hiking across ice. “I hold above a careless land, The menace of the skies, Within the hollow of my hand, The sleeping tempest lies; Mine are the promise of the morn, The triumph of the day; And parting sunset’s beam forlorn, Upon my heights’ delay.” Snow-covered mountains - climbers. “The ‘Hog Back’ is the ‘ridge pole’ of the glacier and you know how difficult it is to walk a ridge pole.” Climbers - snow-covered mountain from a distance - panorama of mountains, valleys, streams. “Here one finds perfect peace and quiet, in a solitude that soothes.” Camp, campers, horses. “No particular rules for dress and no particular place to go.” Camp scenes - hikers roped together on snowy slope. “Where one false step means a plunge into eternity, where the laws of gravitation are defied and thrill follows thrill.” Hikers climb with care.
