Description

The original catalog description provided by the Ford Motor Company reads as follows: a. Beaver at work - fell tree, float it in water - woman examining and trying on beaver coat and hat - beaver dam under construction. [1918] b. “Sparkling and glittering in the sun like the shattered jewels of some fallen monarch.” Workers break carborundum with mallets - throw it into crusher. “And now the grains are ready for sorting, which is done by ‘sieving’ as the grains are passed through screens of varying coarseness.” “It is now necessary to bind the grains together in order that they may be shaped into grinding wheels, drills, hones, etc.” “So a bonding agent of clay is, mixed with the carborundum grains in a tumbling barrel.” “Or the clay and the grains are churned very wet in basins, a process not unlike the making of mud pies.” “A carborundum wheel is made by a pressing process. The grain and the bond, slightly moistened, are subjected to a pressure of 904,000 pounds.” Molding and pressing machinery in operation - finished wheel. “Or by the puddling process in which the grain and bond are poured into molds and allowed to dry and stiffen.” “And then turned down to shape on a potter’s wheel.” “Sharpening stones are pressed to accurate shape and size.” Women work at long tables - pack carborundum and clay into molds. “Now the materials are ready for the ‘bake shop’ or kiln room where they bake for two weeks at high temperature.” Workers carry wheels into kiln. “Removed from the kilns, the wheels are carefully inspected and trued and given a speed test.” Testing machinery in operation. “Carborundum performs a wealth of service, on the farm, in the shop and in the home.” Farmer sharpening scythe - blast furnace in operation - workers shoveling materials in furnace - carborundum grains being screened - grains fall into barrels - workers carrying wheels. [1919] c. Men fishing in trout stream. [1919] d. Shows various processes in the printing of Government bonds: inspection - operating the presses - trimming. [1919]
