Description
The original catalog description provided by the Ford Motor Company reads as follows: “Pig iron is changed into steel by re-melting in an open hearth furnace.” Horizontal crane pushing metal into furnace. “Eighty tons of molten steel fill this ladle.” Molten metal pouring from furnace into ladle. “Casting steel into huge billets or ingots.” Row of molds filled with molten steel. “Trainloads of ingots on the way to heating pits to be prepared for rolling mill.” Huge ingots on flatcars being pushed by locomotive - rows of ingots. “The immense steel fingers transfer the ingot from pit to the conveyor. The white hot ingot goes on to the bloom mill.” Hot ingot on conveyor, being dropped onto conveyor car on tracks. “Powerful and heavy rollers in the bloom mill roll the steel ingot into a rod. Could man hammer the steel into shape?” Ingot entering rollers, moving back and forth in rollers, changing shape - worker tending rolling machinery - bar of steel on conveyor. “Heavy bars are rolled out to thin rods.” Workers operating rolling machinery - machinery in operation. “White hot rods are then drawn into desired sizes.” Rods in several different machines - workers operating controls, moving rods with prongs - pattern made by hot rods moving through dark mill - workers guiding rods into cutting machine. “Steel centers of United States. Note their locations in reference to iron mines, Great Lakes, and coal.” Map of Great Lake region. “Why is Pittsburgh America’s steel center?” Panoramic views of steel mills, river, railroad tracks. “Man uses steel for bridges, buildings, and ships.
