Description

The original catalog description provided by the Ford Motor Company reads as follows: On the great plains of the West and Northwest, where once roved the American buffalo, are to be found immense ranches. Here the cattle wander and feed until their owners are ready to ship them to the packing houses.” View of ranch house and barn. “Each ranch has a particular brand for its cattle and often the name of the ranch is taken from this mark. For instance, this ranch, located near Calgary, Canada, is named ‘Bar U.’ The headquarters of the ‘-U’ Ranch.” Ranch house. “‘Alex’ Fleming, manager of the ranch. The ‘-U’ covers 125,000 acres of ground.” Man posing on horse. “On the ranges of Southern Alberta, Canada, the cattle (excepting dairy cows) winter in the open.” View of cattle on open range. “Free to wander at will for a year at a time, the cattle become widely scattered.” Cattle spread out over hillside. “To ‘round-up’ the strayed cattle means that the cow-puncher must spend days in the saddle on his lonely ride over the range.” Cowboys rounding up cattle. “Soon the wanderers begin to gather by the thousands.” Large herd of cattle - cowboy on horse. “Then the calves are ‘cut out’ from the herd for they as yet bear no mark of identification and must therefore be branded.” Cowboys cutting out calves. “The newcomers are shown into the ‘-U’ record office, the branding corral.” Cattle being herded into corral. “Hot fires are prepared and the branding irons made ready.” Cowboys starting fire - cowboy roping calf - cowboys bulldogging calf. “Branding.” Several views of cowboys roping, bulldogging, and branding calves. “But here they are again free to lose themselves for another year.” Cattle leaving corral, cowboys. “The End.” [1921]
