Improved Fordson Agricultural Tractor Part 1

Description

The original catalog description provided by the Ford Motor Company reads as follows: [part 1] “The water vapor carried through the carburetor allows the spark to be advanced farther without making the engine knock, especially when kerosene is used.” Close-ups of the above and following Fordson features. “The crank case is ventilated by a breather pipe that connects the crank case with the air chamber on top of the air washer.” “The old thermos system has been supplanted by a new cooling system operated by a centrifugal pump located inside the connection between the cylinder head and top of the radiator. It is operated by the fan shaft.” “The new lubricating system is a combination of pump, splash and gravity feed. All grit and carbon are removed from the oil by the screen. This ensures clean oil for the moving parts at all times.” “The transmission of the Fordson is designed for heavy duty [work]. Instead of ball bearings it is equipped throughout with large roller bearings.” “A sixteen plate transmission is now used instead of five. This large surface area gives more positive braking or stopping.” “The transmission brake control is combined with the clutch and is operated by pushing all the way down. A convenient latch allows the clutch to be held out or the brake locked.” “The gasoline carburetor is a new designed, down-draft carburetor that ensures the correct mixture of air and fuel for complete combustion at all speeds.” “Also the hot spot manifold has sufficient heating surface for satisfactory use of ordinary gasoline or petrol without overheating the mixture to a point of reducing the power of the engine.” “These heavy steel fenders, braced at six points, protect the operator from dust and dirt and greatly add to comfort and safety. The low platform of non-slip foot-tread serves as a steps. These are standard equipment now.” “The strong steel steering wheel is covered with hard rubber provided with corrugated grip. All controls are within each reach.” “The front end of the tractor is now relived from vibration by a coil spring set in the front cover casting.” “The new front wheels are of one piece construction, heavy and strong. Their additional weight ensures effective steering when pulling maximum loads.” “Here is the Dearborn experimental laboratory, the designing and experimenting for the improved Fordson is worked out.” “Part Two will follow immediately.” [1930]
