WATER SUPPLY OF A GREAT CITY, THE Part 1

Description

The original catalog description provided by the Ford Motor Company reads as follows: “If we follow the water along the street through this main, it would come to the surface in this hydrant.” Man opens hydrant, turns on water - diagram showing course of water from pumping station to hydrant. “Water has many uses in every community. For fire protection the supply must be abundant.” Firemen spray burning building. “The intake crib is strong and massive to withstand storms.” Group walking around top of intake crib. “The water flows into the intake crib through a screen.” Screen being raised. “The water flows into the intake crib far below the surface of the lake.” Water inside crib. “From the crib the water flows through tunnels to the pumping plant on the shore. The tunnels are cut out of the solid rock and large enough for a man to walk through.” View inside tunnel. “The water is filtered to free it from impurities. The filters are tanks of sand through which the water slowly seeps.” Filter tanks. “Filtered water is pure, while unfiltered water contains silt and impurities.” “After the water is filtered, it is treated with chlorine which destroys the harmful bacteria. The chlorine gas is forced into the water.” Man checks gauges. “Chlorine in the water is harmless and protects us. For fifteen years the goldfish has lived in this tank of water which is charged with chlorine twenty times stronger than our drinking water.” “Mammoth engines pump the water constantly into the water mains and keeps it at regular pressure even in the highest building.” Pumps in operation. “A pure water supply is a necessity in every community. The pioneer placed his home near a spring or stream. At present only a small supply of water comes from bubbling springs like this.” “Some springs are surrounded by stone walls to keep the water pure.” People take water from spring in enclosure with steps down into it. “Wells cannot supply the millions of gallons of water required for a large city. This stream does not contain enough water for the daily supply of Chicago, New York or any large city.” Woods and stream. “New York City brings water from the Catskill mountains through an aqueduct one hundred miles in length. Los Angeles obtains water through these large iron pipes from mountain streams two hundred miles distant.” View of pipeline. “St. Louis, Cincinnati and other cities obtain water from rivers like this.” Low dam. “Detroit, Chicago and Cleveland and many other cities on the Great Lakes use lake water.” “The lake water is obtained several miles from the shore at the intake crib which is built of rock and steel.” View of crib from boat.
