Description
The original catalog description provided by the Ford Motor Company reads as follows: “This picture is loaned through the courtesy of your local Ford dealer whose place of business is a headquarters for the Christmas Goodfellows’ Club.” Snow covered houses - people walking through snow - car passing - children throwing snowballs. “‘Merry Christmas.’ With these words the heart of the world lifts up as if by magic and a fellowship toward man, too good to last, springs into existence once more.” “This spirit has swooped down upon a group of honest-to-goodness bachelors.” Scenes of snow-covered house, group of men sitting around talking. “Colonel Landers -- longing to experience the joys his parents once had at Christmas.” “Boys, Christmas is at hand. What do you say to us all playing Santa Claus to some poor families?” “We’ll meet at the Goodfellows headquarters tomorrow morning at 10:00.” Group gets up, they shake Col. Landers’ hand, leave. “Good-night, good-night -- good-night.” “Out of the land of nod comes a message --” Col. Landers sleeping restlessly - children sleigh riding down ramp - playing in snow - train passes in background. “-- which has been told time and again --” Boy looking in store window - traffic, pedestrian and automobile pass in background. “-- and experienced by hundreds of little kiddies each year.” Group of poor children looking at toys. “At 10 o’clock next morning the boys were all on the job at Goodfellows headquarters.” Man enters club, shakes Col. Landers’ hand. “Give us some poor families’ addresses, we want to brighten up a few unhappy Christmases.” Men receive addresses. “Experiencing a three-months sick spell and an empty pocketbook for Christmas.” Poor family hanging up stockings - mother and three little children in bed saying their prayers. “Dear Santa Claus, please come tonight and fill our stockings.” Mother kisses children - tucks them in bed - leaves with kerosene lamp. “Our Christmas won’t be much to the kiddies this year.” Mother and father talking. “Don’t feel badly. Our love and trust in Him will care for us.” Car pulls up in front of house - mother answers door - man enters with large basket. “Santa Claus sent me here tonight.” Unpacks basket - puts presents on table - gives large goose to mother - leaves - children asleep in bed. “And again the Old Wizard of dreams paints a picture.” Santa Claus in reindeer-drawn sleigh lands on house - Santa Claus goes down chimney - fills stockings - close-up of Santa Claus - children wake up. “December 25 -- Christmas.” They get out of bed - run in and kiss mother - she points at stockings - gives them presents. “Oh that the spirit of Christmas could continue forever and ever. But -- we’re wishing you a Merry Christmas earnestly enough to last a whole year.” [1920]
