UP IN THE RIP VAN WINKLE COUNTRY WITH JOHN BURROUGHS, THOMAS EDISON, HENRY FORD, AND HARVEY FIRESTONE AT YAMA FARMS Part 1
Description
The original catalog description provided by the Ford Motor Company reads as follows: “The ‘Big Four’ camping quartet out for a stroll along a road in the Catskill Mountains near Yama Farms.” “Mr. Ford gives a moment’s thought to nature, while his companions hold an earnest discussion.” “The secret’s out. They were discussing a tree chopping contest. Mr. Edison is timekeeper; Mr. Firestone referee.” “They’re off in a shower of chips. Mr. Burroughs and Mr. Ford start chopping at Mr. Edison’s signal.” “A close-up of Mr. Ford in action.” “Mr. Burroughs makes the chips fly.” “Relatives and friends in the background spurring on the contestants.” Applauding spectators. “The time keeper and the referee seem to take pleasure in their work.” “More encouragement from relatives and friends with Mr. Edison and Mr. Firestone acting in their official capacities.” “Mr. Burroughs’ tree falls first; Mr. Ford’s following a few seconds later.” “The spectators cheer as the trees come down.” “‘Good work’ says Mr. Edison to Mr. Burroughs.” “‘A little more practice,’ says he to Mr. Ford.” “The entire party discuss the contest.” “At West Park, home of Mr. Burroughs.” “Making preparations for one of Mr. Burroughs’ famous ‘Brigand steak’ meals.” “Mr. Burroughs and Mr. Ford braving smoke and flames to get things going.” “Mr. Edison makes a contribution to the fire.” “Mr. Ford and Mr. Burroughs still at work with Mr. Edison standing in silent judgment.” “Mr. Burroughs gives Mr. Firestone some advice about ‘Brigand’ cooking while Mr. Edison looks on with interest.” “More help arrives, Mr. Firestone joining Messrs. Ford and Burroughs each one cooking in true ‘Brigand’ style.” “The ‘chief cooks’ still at it with Messrs. Edison and Firestone watching the operation.” “The whole party gathers around the fire.” “The cooks have finished now for the dinner table where the party do justice to the steak.” [1920]
