Description
The original release sheet reads: 1A/B/C/D. BIG 3 ADJOURN: As Truman, Stalin and Attlee complete their heavy deliberations their advisors Byrnes. Molotov and Bevin are seen to be on the best of cooperative terms. / THE ATOMIC BOMB: U.S. scientists, in collaboration with European savants, produce the atomic bomb, the most destructive weapon in the history of the world. It dwarfs Great Britain's "Grand Slam" bomb, and equals the bomb load carried by 2,000 B-29's.—As Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japanese port cities, feel the full destructive force of the lethal weapon, some of the startling details of its production are revealed. Two giant properties were created for its completion - a 600,000 acre project at Richland, Wash., and a gigantic manufacturing area at Oak Park, Tenn., which has boomed into the 6th largest city in that state.—Leading personalities in the amazing production include, Dr. E.O. Lawrence, inventor of the atom smashing cyclotron; Col. Mathias, Commander of the Richland, Wash., project; Gen. Groves, in charge of the entire program; and the two scientists, Dr. Vannevar Bush and Dr. Richard Tolman. Quantities of uranium, shipped from Alberta, Canada, are used in the secret bomb because of the mineral's atomic structure. / RUSSIA DECLARES WAR: At the insistence of the United States and Britain, Russia declares war on Japan, as an enemy of civilization. A stirring parade of Russia's armed might foreshadows the doom that awaits Japan. / PRES. TRUMAN SPEAKS: President Truman warns Japan that its war-making capacity will be totally obliterated, and that it will be completely engulfed by sea and land forces. 2. MAJOR BONG KILLED: LOS ANGELES, CA - Major Richard Bong, America's top air ace, is killed while testing a P-80 jet fighter plane. 3. THE 10TH CELEBRATES: GERMANY - The 10th Armored Division of the 3rd U.S. Army celebrates its 3rd anniversary. Hot dogs and a circus provide barrels of fun, but the grizzly riding the motor bike runs away with the show. (LOCAL – CANADA) ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY. (LOCAL – CANADA) OUR TROOPS HONORED IN OSTEND.
