Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. HAWAII IS VOTED INTO UNION AS 50TH STATE - The Territory of Hawaii is voted into the Union as the Fiftieth state, after some of the swiftest action by Congress in years. Only the mechanics of admitting the state (some 2,000 miles from continental United States) remain. A two-day celebration goes into high gear in Honolulu. Huge bonfires, aerial and offshore military pyrotechnics and of course hula dancing in the streets. Gestures of gratitude over the prospective ending of territorial status for the islands of Hawaii. Hail! Hawaii, U.S.A. 2. THREE NEW CARDINALS - Pope John XXIII bestows red hat upon three Cardinals whom he appointed last December but who were unable to attend at that time. The three new princes of the Church are: Cardinal Fietta, Italy; Fernando Cardinal Cento, Portugal; and Jose Maria Cardinal Bueno y Monreal, Spain. 3A/B/C. SECRETARY OF STATE JOHN FOSTER DULLES - Secretary of State John Foster Dulles leaves Walter Reed Hospital for another brief and leisurely drive thru Rock Creek Park. He stops at his home for a visit with his pet poodle, Pepin. Pepin has a slight cold, said Mr. Dulles. / VERTICAL VERONIQUE - Trim, slim Veronique, a French research rocket soars 112 miles upward from the Sahara. It’s one in a series of launchings to study the upper atmosphere. An enlightening glimpse of a member of France’s successful rocket program. / SIX-WHEEL “RUNABOUT” - A new Swiss truck is demonstrated in Germany. A double-jointed chassis affair with a six-wheel drive. It can climb a barrier higher than its front wheels. And can conquer just about any terrain it encounters. 4A/B. SPORTS — CANADA DOWNS U.S.S.R. IN WORLD HOCKEY - At Prague Czechoslovakia, Canada’s Belleville McFarlands win the world amateur ice hockey championship. Canada scored 21 goals and allowed seven in its five games. One of Canada’s goal getters was Pete Conacher, one of several former professionals who augmented the Belleville team. It was Canada’s 18th world title in 27 competitions and the second in a row. / NCAA AT LAWRENCE, KANSAS - Cincinnati wins over Kansas State, 85-75. And heads for the nationals to face California at Louisville, Ky. Cincinnati has something of a one-man team. And what a man! A six-foot-five phenomenal package of power named Oscar Robertson! California—here he comes. That tricky dribbler and master of court strategy. The Big O.
