Description

The original release sheet reads: IKE WARNS REDS ON CONGO MEDDLING At his White House press conference, President Eisenhower warns that Soviet supplies of aircraft and military equipment to the Lumumba government increase tensions in the Congo and endanger hopes of a peaceful solution through United Nations efforts to ease the explosive crisis. HURRICANE DONNA After battering Puerto Rico with savage flash floods that cause wide damage and take some 116 lives, Hurricane Donna moves North towards the Keys and Cuba, watched with fearful apprehension by warning stations and householders along the entire Eastern seaboard. LONDON IN DONNYBROOK Heavyweight Brian London’s challenge match with European champ Rick Richardson, in Wales, erupts in a Donnybrook after the ref declares Richardson the winner. London keeps on fighting, with his father and brother joining him in the ring, for one of the wildest melees since the Marquis of Queensberry brought order to the squared circle. OLYMPIC HIGHLIGHTS In men’s platform diving from the 35-foot tower, Bob Webster of Santa Ana, California upsets favored teammate Gary Tobian, to win the gold medal. Tobian, of Glendale, Calif., takes second, with third honors going to Brian Phelps of Britain. In the women’s 200 meter, Tennessee State’s sensational Tigerbelle Wilma Rudolph wins her second of three gold medals. A spectacular finish in the 110 meter high hurdles as Lee Calhoun of Gary, Indiana and Willie May of Chicago go down to the wire in a near dead heat. Calhoun repeats his 1956 victory by using his head to butt the tape.
