S. Marihe Corps film released by Department of Defense) Scout Dogs being used by the Marines in combat for the first time since World War II, are playing an important role in Vietnan by assisting the Marines in locating the elusive Viet Cong. During their first month of operational activity in Vietnam, 30 dogs of the 1st Marine Scout Dog Platoon, contributed to the capture of approximately 100 Viet Cong suspects, uncovered more than 50 booby traps, located several weapons as well as great quantities of rice and clothing, and have even discovered batteries used to detonate mines and booby traps. These dogs participate in combat and reconnaissance patrols, and their greatest effectiveness comes from their ability to locate caves and tunnel complexes used by the Viet Cong to conceal themselves as well as weapons, food and medical supplies. While searching villages, the dogs are able to locate the tight lids used by the Viet Cong to cover caves and tumels even though little scent escapes. Usually the air holes provide the dog the clue, and further searching locates the entrances and exits. The keen noses of the dogs are extremely effective in alerting their handlers to any evidence of Viet Cong in the area.
