DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE OFFICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION THE PENTAGON, WASHINGTON 25, D.C. - LIBERTY 5-6700 AUDIO-VISUAL DIVISION - RAD10-TV-NEWSFILM SECTION ROOM 2E791 - EXTENSION 75111 (A) Release No. 160-58 DUPE NEGATIVE TO: Footage: 200 & FINE GRAIN TO; 3 September 1958 NEW GUIDED TORPEDO ADDED TO.U. S. SUBMARINE ARMAMENTS (Official Navy footage released by Dept. of Defense) The U. S. Navy has developed a wire-guided torpedo, the Mark 39. Specially designed wire connects the Mark 39 torpedo to its launching vessel; the thread-like wire is played out as the torpedo travels through the water Over this wire the torpedo receives guidance commands that direct it to its target. The Mark 39 reseubles a conventional torpedo but is actually an underwater guided missile capable of closing in on its target despite countermeasures and evasive maneuvers of enewy vessels. Wire-guidance enables the torpedo to follow the target until the "kill is made. Both the torpedo and director were developed for the Navy's Bureau of Ordnance by Vitro Laboratories, Silver Spring, Maryland, a division of Vitro Corp. of America. The directors were manufactured by Vitro and the torpedoes by Philco Corp.'s plant in Philadelphia. Sequences show: (a) Mark 39 being fired. (b) Torpedo being guided by wire. (c) Following the target. NOTE TO EDITORS: Handed out in Washington to Telenews for servicing both TV and theatrical pool members.
