Description

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE INDEX OFFICE OF NEWS SERVICES THE PENTAGON, WASHINGTON 25, D.C. - LIBERTY 5-6700 AUDIO-VISUAL DIVISION - RAD10-TV-NEWSFILM SECTION ROOM 2E791 EXTENSION 75111 Release No. 20-59 Footage: 200 DUPE NEGATIVE TO: Release 2 February 1959 FINE GRAIN TO; MGM NBC ARMY ENGINEERS BUILD NEW ARCTIC ICE TUNNEL WITH STORAGE ROOMS TO TEST MOVEMENT OF ICE CAP (Official Army footage released by Dept. of Defense ) Army Corps of Engineers scientists from the Snow, Ice and Permafrost Research Establishments at Wilmette, Ill., are literally digging for scientific knowledge on the Arctic Polar Ice Cap. Using automatic coal mining machinery, they have carved out a 1150 foot tunnel in the Ice Cap as part of & research program to obtain scientific information that will enable men to build, live, work and fight, if necessary, in Polar regions. This tunnel, built during the summer of 1958, connects with three large storage rooms carved out by the machine under the ice. The scientists measure the rate of closure caused by the tremendous weight of the ice above the tunnel. The Army Engineers have found that machinery stored in 1ce rooms will not rust and aviation gasoline improves when stored in pits carved out of the ice in the tunnel where the temperatures remain a constant 10 to 15 degrees above zero. Sequences show: (a) Using automatic coal mining machinery, scientists have carved out a 1150' tunnel in the Ice Cap. (b) Machine cuts the ice, automatically loads it onto a conveyor which carries it out of the tunnel and dumps it at a convenient location near the tunnel entrance.
