DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE OFFICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATIC THE PENTAGON, WASHINGTON 25, D.C. - LIBERTY 5-6700 TELENEWS MGM NEWS OF THE D (SOUND) RADIO - TV BRANCH, TELEVISION SECTION (A) PICTORIAL BRANCH, NEWSREEL SECTION ROOM 2E811a EXT. 77222 Release No. 42-54 ROOM 2D780a EXT. 75111 Footage: 335 Ft. (x) 31 March 1954 SECRETARY OF DEFENSE SEES PACIFIC TESTS AS SPUR TO ADEQUATE CIVIL DEFENSE: (Official Department of Defense Footage) At the Pentagon, Secretary of Defense Charles E. Wilson sums up views outlined in press conference in the following statements "In view of the free world's strength, it is my opinion that it would be disastrous for an aggressor to start a war. We all hope are do not have another all-out war, for if we dog it will in this atonic age be a war of survival. We intend to be ina positianto deter any military aggression just as we intend to win any war if it starts. "The results of the tests in the Pacific are unbalievable in many ways. The whole concept of modern warfare is involved in realities that are hard to accept. But we must learn to accept them and live with then just as we always have throughout history. "I have never believed in scaring people, but W8 all know enough about bomb damage in World War II and what the A bombs and H bombs can do to know the value of civil defense. We must take a greater individual interest in civil defense.
