(Official Navy Footage Released by Department of Defense) A Navy plane circles a new volcano erupting from the sea about 150 miles southwest of Tokyo, Japan. The volcano island from which huge pillars of smoke arise as the volcanic formation continues to erupt was discovered by a Japanese fisherman on September 17, 1952. At the time these aerial views were filmed, the island was about 30 yards in diameter and about 6 yards above sea level. On the close scenes, the activity of the undersea eraption, creating the volcanic cone, can be seen spewing huge chunks of red-hot lava into the boiling waters.
