S. MARINE SCOUT DOGS DEVOTED TO DUTY IN SOUTH VIETNAM (Official Department of Defense Sound Motion Picture Film by the U. S. Marine Corps under the direction of the MACV Office of Information) The 56 dogs of the 1st and 2nd U. S. Marine Scout Dog Platoons are the eyes, ears, and noses of Marines in the field in South Vietnam. At the Scout Dog Platoon, Da Nang, Leatherneck handlers work hard at keeping the dogs trim and trained for missions in the field. The dogs learn blind obedience, and practice attacking and killing, when the Marines agitate them in a simulated situation. A scout dog is good for two to three years of field work before he loses effectiveness. There has never been an instance when a Marine patrol scout dog has been ambushed in Vietnam. A keen sense of smell permits the dogs to alert the handler long before the enemy is visible. Graves memoralize the dogs which have been killed or are missing in action.
