Photo- graphy by SP-6 Wiggins and SP-4 Henke. Sound by SP-5 Clendenen.) It takes 12 months for his number to come up. But when the U.S. serviceman receives his rotation orders to return to the United States from Vietnam, it takes only hours to process him and get him on his way. The road home for the Vietnam veteran begins at a replacement company like the 507th Replacement Company at Cam Ranh Bay. At a special briefing, the returnees are told exactly what is going to happen to them in the next 12 hours, or right up until the moment he boards a contract commercial airliner for the flight home. Because he is entering the U.S. from a foreign country, he must submit a customs declaration the same as any foreign traveler, There are several other forms to be filled out, but the most important one to the man going home is called the Military Transportation Authorization, the mili- tary equivilant of an airline ticket. Once his gear is weighed and checked, the returning veteran will not have to touch it until he is on American soil, He's very close to home when this is done. One final stop is the Paymaster's Office where all Military Payment Certificates and Vietnamese currency are exchanged for American greenbacks" An air-conditioned bus whisks him to a waiting airliner, and a waiting hostess straight out of the States, and his tour of Vietnam is over.
