OF DEPARTMENT NEWSFILM RELEASE OFFICE OF ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF DEFENSE (PUBLIC AFFAIRS) UNITED AMERICA WASHINGTON, D.C. - 20301 STATES OF PLEASE NOTE DATE September 25, 1967 IMMEDIATE RELEASE Footage: 90' Time: 2:30 OXford 7-5111 NUMBER: V-283-67 16mm color composite print Room 2E 771 U.S. JOINT MOBILE RIVERINE FORCE ATTACKS VIETCONG IN MEKONG DELTA, SOUTH VIETNAM (Official Department of Defense motion picture film by U.S. Navy under the direc- tion of the MACV Office of Information). Twenty miles south of Saigon, an unique Army-Navy strike force called "Mobile Riverine Force" is busy daily pursuing the Vietcong in the Mekong Delta. Here in the Soi Rap River over 1,100 sailors and soldiers make daily forays against the enemy from Self-Propelled Barracks Ships, the Beneway and the Colleton. Leaving the "mother" ship some 25 armored boats and troop landing craft depart on a search and destroy mission. Upon arrival at the area of suspected enemy con- centrations the ships "prep" the beach with cannon and machine gun fire to detonate booby-traps and eliminate possible ambush positions. Jets join the attack on the enemy position. After the areas have been "preped" the patrol lands troops on the river bank in a round attack on the enemy area. The elusive Vietcong fled the area without en- gaging this patrol, although the unit rounded up a few suspects which are brought back for questioning by the South Vietnamese interrogators. Tramping through the delta is a muddy business. Some of the troops wash their boots by tieing them on the rear of the boat while others get an abbreviated "shower" courtesy of the ship's fire brigade.
