Description

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE OFFICE OF NEWS SERVICES THE PENTAGON, WASHINGTON 25, D.C. - LIBERTY 5-6700 AUDIO-VISUAL DIVISION RADI0-TV-NEWSFILM BRANCH ROOM 2E791 EXTENSION 75111 Release No. 43-65 Footage: 195' 16mm DUPE NEGATIVE TO: February 25, 1965 FINE GRAIN TO; OPERATION SATLOR HAT (Official Navy footage released by Department of Defense) The first phase of Operation Sailor Hat, a series of three large scale TNT explosions to test the blast resistance of Navy ships, was conducted jointly by the Navy and the Defense Atomic Support Agency, February 6g near Kahoolawe Island, Havaii. Three manned ships were anchored near the blast site to measure the effects of the explosion. The ex-light cruiser USS ATLANTA, taken out of mothballs and refitted with special blast recording and measuring devices, served as primary test ship, accompanied by the guided missile destroyer USS COCHRANE and the Canadian destroyer escort HMCS FRASER. The ships were positioned to yards from the blast. 083 Five hundred tons of TNT piled up in a 17-foot hemispheric mound were used in the blast which simulated a one kiloton nuclear surface explosion. Prir to the detonation, a horizontal pattern of rockets were fired to provide smoke trails used in gauging the speed of the blast's shock wave. Date from the tests will be used by the Navy to evaluate present and planned "blast hardened" structures on board ship and by the Defense Atomic Support Agency, sponsor of the experiment, in studies of blast and shock effect over water. Sequences show: (a) Aerial views of Kahoolawe Island, Hawaii. (b) Ground shots from the Island showing ammuition mound. (c) Views of the three ships. (a) Aerial view of the explosion.
