South Korean Marines Block Infiltration Along the DMZ [Demilitarized Zone] of Korea Part 1

Description

OF NEWSFILM RELEASE OFFICE OF ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF DEFENSE (PUBLIC AFFAIRS) UNITED WASHINGTON, D.C. - 20301 STATES OF PLEASE NOTE DATE IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 8, 1968 OXford 75111 Number 74-68 Footage: 162' 16mm Color Master Room 2E 771 Time: 4:30 SOUTH KOREAN MARINES BLOCK INFILTRATION ALONG THE DEMILITARIZED ZONE OF KOREA (Official U. S. Army Film Released by the Department of Defense) The Demarcation Line separating the two Koreas, runs through the center of the Han River. Although infiltration across the border along the western-most sector of the Demilitarized Zone is considered light due to the absence of cover and con- cealment along the river, the elements of a Republic of Korea Marine brigade man outposts along the Han River and observe activities in the north. At observation posts such as this, the ROK Marines look through binoculars, telescopes, and periscope binoculars, and watch the North Korean movements on the other side of the river. A tank company attached to a ROK Marine brigade conducts patrols on the banks and inland south of the DMZ as a routine anti-infiltration counter measure against possible infiltration attempts by the North Koreans. The river is patroled both night and day. The Marines, in relatively small boats, cover a 42-mile stretch of the river during the never-ending patrols. At some points in this portion of the sector, the river is at its narrowest and the land masses of North and South Korea are only 1,400 meters apart. These ROK Marines are typical of the many South Korean units assigned to stop infiltration into the south by Communist groups. - MORE - NOTE TO EDITORS: PLEASE CREDIT DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE IN TITLE OR COMMENTARY This motion film released to DOD pool member designated is for duplication and distri- bution to interested TV and newsreel pool members.
