Finding the Time - 1952 Reel 1 · Part 2
Description
This film deals with the pressing need to modernize small- and medium-sized factories to improve productivity and working conditions. Two friends, managers of a machine shop and a small wood-working plant in northern England in the early 1950s, can't find the time to upgrade their enterprises: floors and ceilings need repair, work stations are dirty and cluttered, and aisles are blocked, lighting and ventilation are poor, work flow is a jumble, and workers lack decent amenities to wash. The managers encourage each other to make a start and their initial humbling efforts are described with wry burnout. But persistence pays off, especially when they learn to consult their workers. With little expenditure of capital (less than the managers thought), the improvements result in fewer rejects, higher production, better morale and fewer accidents. A Marshall Plan film made in Britain by the Realist Film Unit, in association with Film Centre, London. Sponsored by the Mutual Security Agency (MSA) and directed by Denys Parsons.
