AIRBORNE RADAR GUN SIGHT, AN/APG-15 Part 3

Description

Summary: Reel 1: Film describes operation of AN/APG-15 radar gunsight mounted on tail of B-24 and B-29. Comparison is made between AN/APG-8 and 15. (Radia-tion Laboratory, Massachusetts Insitute of Technology, December 1944). 1) MLS B-29 taking off toward camera. 2) PS with aircraft. ASV of B-29 in flight, camera ship flies directly over top of B-29 making direct down shot on aircraft. 3) MCU SV B-29 in flight. 4) MLS landing of B-29 toward camera. 5) MCU RV of B-29 taxiing and turning, hangar in bg. 6) CU tail section of 3-29, crew member alights from same. 7) CU of tail section showing guns. 8) CU tail section of B-24. (Sound track explains comparison between NA-APG-15.and AN-APG8.) 9) CU of the transmitter-receiver unit used in the AN-APG-15. 10) CU of the antenna. 1l) CU of the pi1ot's sight. 12) CU of automatic range instrument. 13) CU of a range turbo unit. 14) Several CU views of various parts of the radar system. 15) CU tail section of B-29. 16) CU of radar screen, situated in tail of aircraft, in operation. 17) Interior of tail turret showing various controls of radar system. 18) Animated shot of tail section of B-29 showing location of indicator control box and antenna, range unit indicator, amplifier, junction boxes, inverter turbo units. Total weight of equipment is 213 pounds. 19) Animation of B-29's SV showing the various parts and weights of each. 20) CU of scale with textbooks in bg, hand pointing to measurement on scale. 21) Interior of aircraft showing mecahnic making thorough check of radar system. 22) CU of tail gunner pulling various parts. 23) Animation showing the range units in operation. 24) Animation of radar beam as it locks on target, follows target unit it goes out of range then shows radar waves -- two waves per second. 25) Interior of aircraft showing radar control switches. 26) Animation of radar beams showing radar set locking on target. Demonstration is given on radar locking on several targets at one period -- this is controlled by a switch in the interior of aircraft giving direction lock change will go. 27) CU of screen in gunners compartment showing image of an aircraft as it comes toward plane. First image is dot then finally changes to shape of aircraft. 28) CU SV of tail gunner operating gun turret with the help of radar. 29) CU of tail gunner, hand firing gun. 30) CU of tail gunner at his position operating gun. 31) CU tail section of the B-24. 32) CU of tail gunner watching radar scope. 33) CU of scope. 34) CU of radar screen showing ring sight on moving target. 35) Same test is made using a stationary target. THE PRECEDING RESULTS WERE OBTAINED WITH AN AN-APG-8 OR B-24 INSTALLATION. (Narration: The following sequence shows the first B-29 installation undergoing actual firing trials by the Army at Eglin Field. For these tests also the gunner was hooded so that he could see only the radar presentation.) 36) MLS B-29 in flight, radio-controlled. (Narration: Total of four radio-controlled aircraft were shot down) 37) LS of B-29 going into dive toward water. 38) Animation of the detection volumn Insertion, marks B-29 and detection pattern. Insert animated tit1a Fixed Gun Pattern. 39) Animation of radar screen. Animated title inserted, scanty detector Detection Pattern. Inserted Animated title, Scanning Gun Pattern. 40) Animation of coverage of the AN-APG-8 showing the detection pattern and the fixed gun pattern -- comparison was made with the AN-APG-15. 41) Interior of classroom showing instructor pointing to drawing of B-29 on blackboard, giving instruction on locations of radar equipment, etc. 42) CU of student learning to track by radar. 43) CU tail section of B-29 while in flight. 44) Animation is given on the procedure used on long flight -- shows how the radar gunner's position is placed in automatic fixed position, demonstrates how most attack aircraft coming toward plane would be picked up, although it is possible to be attacked from another angle where the radar would not pick up the signal. 45) MLS, SV of B-29 in flight, camera ship flies under aircraft. 46) Aerial single RV CU tail section of B-29 in flight. 47) MLS direct SV B-29 in flight. 48) MLS RV of B-29 in flight. (Narration: Summary of previously run film.) Orig. color
