New “Safety” Liner Launched (Universal Newsreel, Dec 1938)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. NEW “SAFETY” LINER LAUNCHED: QUINCY, MA - The S.S. Ancon, second of three fast, modern vessels for the U.S. Gov’t’s NY-Panama service, slides down the ways after a sparkling send-off by Mrs. Harry Woodring, wife of the Secretary of War. 2A/B/C/D. SIGN FRANCO-NAZI PEACE PACT: PARIS, FRANCE - A non-aggression treaty, hailed as a step towards European peace, is signed in the colorful Clock Room of the Elysee Palace by Von Ribbentrop and George Bonnet, Nazi and French foreign ministers, respectively. / REFUGEES STARVE IN EXILE: BRATISLAVA, CZECH. - (Exclusive) Tragic scenes as hundreds of suffering Jews, banished from their homes when Hungary took over former Czech land, eke out a pitiful existence in a “No Man’s Land,” as pitiful pawns in Europe’s game of terror and aggression. / EDEN VISITS U.S. CAPITAL: WASHINGTON, D.C. - Anthony Eden, former British Foreign Secretary, visits the White House, Washington’s tomb at Mount Vernon, and other points of interest during his sojourn in the United States. / CADETS HOLD COLORFUL REVIEW: ST. CYR, FRANCE - It’s an impressive sight as students of the “West Point of France,” looked to as future defenders of the Republic, parade before the Tri-Color during traditional “presentation” ceremonies. 3. BABY ELK GET NEW HOME: OLYMPIC MTS., WA - (Exclusive) A herd of 26 young Elk, raised by the state game department, are hauled in special trucks to a wilderness tract, where they are set free to colonize and assure the continuation of the species. 4. INVENTORS SHOW NEW GADGETS: LOS ANGELES, CA - An automatic dog feeder! The “Razzberry” horn for impatient motorists! Or an overnight dimple machine! Just a few of the startling devices shown at the Nat’l Inventors Congress, where everything goes! 5. 200-PD. BABY BORN IN ZOO: EUROPE - They’re celebrating a new arrival at a Continental zoo—a baby elephant no bigger than its mother’s foot, one of the few ever born outside of the jungle! The celebration includes a novel musical trio—a three-elephant orchestra! 6. POOR KIDS HEAR OPERA STARS: NEW YORK, NY - (Exclusive) Metropolitan operatic stars, including Lauritz Melchior, Amy Ellerman and Elizabeth Rethberg, stage a performance of Xmas singing for the entertainment of needy children of the Henry Street Settlement, and the youngsters love it!
