POPE PIUS XII THANKS UNRRA: ROME - In special rites at St. Peter's, the Pope extends pontifical thanks to UNRRA officials for their part in helping alleviate suffering in war-ravaged Europe. It was Pope's last public appearance before rites elevating new Cardinals. 3. SHIP WRECKED IN ALASKA STORM: ALASKA - Dramatic first pictures of liner "Yukon" foundering on reef in severe storm. Almost five hundred passengers were removed to safety during daring rescue operations, although twelve lost their lives. 4. READY WARSHIP FOR ATOM TEST: BREMERTON, WA - The historic battleship, Pennsylvania, has small-caliber guns removed as the Navy begins getting obsolete warship ready for the epochal atom-bomb tests in the Pacific this Spring.
