Daring Steeplejack Removes Menace of Lightning-Hit Spire (Universal Newsreel, Aug 1931)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. DARING STEEPLEJACK REMOVES MENACE OF LIGHTNING-HIT SPIRE: BROOKLYN, NY - George A. McNeill, veteran of three wars, former Army flier, and a human fly for 36 years, scales to the tip of the 325-foot peak to determine its condition. Finding it in need of repairs, he makes the necessary corrections and eliminates the danger. McNeill, now well over 50, climbs onto the city’s pinnacles every day with the same daring displayed when he was a youth. 2. GOVERNMENT DRAINS LAKE NEMI TO RAISE GALLEY OF CALIGULA: ROME, ITALY - Fascist engineers complete the difficult feat which brings to light again the mysterious craft of the mad emperor. The use for which the peculiar ship was built remains undecided but the lore of ancient civilization is revealed by the discoveries of the experts who have been attending the reclamation of the historic vessel. The job has been going on for five years. 3. RAILROADS TO MEET BUS RIVALRY WITH RUBBER-TIRED TRAINS: PARIS, FRANCE - A marvelous new invention takes the jobs and bumps out of travel, making things easy and comfortable for the tourist. The huge high-powered vehicle attains a tremendous speed in a trial run that upsets the records of steam-driven conveyances operating on steel wheels. The lightweight car shoots noiselessly along the tracks at a 77-miles an hour clip in the test spin, and proves itself an answer to the competition of the motor lorry. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 4. LOCKPORT, IL - Claims world’s heavyweight title! — George Hofmeyer tips scales at 674 pounds and sits on 2 chairs. 5. WEST ACTON, MA - Dog learns to walk with wooden leg! — “Teddy” navigates anew after amputation by steel trap. 6. NEW DORP, NY - Abandoned trolleys make unique home colony! — Street-car village built up in heart of metropolis. 7. SEA RARITIES MARK OPENING OF GREAT $3,000,000 AQUARIUM: CHICAGO, IL - A mammoth museum filled with mysteries from the ocean’s depths is erected on the site of the world’s fair. All Chicago flocks to the new fishery to attend the dedication ceremonial and view the specimens, including sea horses, and cows, triggerfish, jewfish, National Champion Goldfish and thousands of other finny curiosities. 9. U.S. REGAINS FAMOUS WIGHTMAN TROPHY IN STIRRING TENNIS DUEL: FOREST HILLS, NY - Mrs. Helen Wills Moody retains her crown as “Queen of the Courts” with a sterling victory over Betty Nuthall, star of England’s net team, sent over to defend the cup. With Helen Jacobs, the one-time national champion gathers enough points in the singles to bring the emblem of feminine supremacy back to America.
