Cards Beat A’s and Bring Championship to National League (Universal Newsreel, Oct 1931)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. CARDS BEAT A’S AND BRING CHAMPIONSHIP TO NATIONAL LEAGUE: ST. LOUIS, MO - With the count tied at three games each, Burleigh Grimes, grizzled veteran of many baseball wars, is sent to the mound to hold Connie Mack’s Philadelphia club in check. While Andy High and George Watkins conspire to give the great spitball artist a four run lead, he holds off the advances of Mack’s maulers until the fatal ninth inning, when he weakens and walks two men. Gabby Street rushes Wild William Hallahan into the breach to retire the last man. Two runs are over, and two to tie up the score are on base with Maxey Bishop at bat. The portsider works Bishop into a three to two count and then he flies out to Pepper Martin, the World Series hero. And again the title flag waves over Sportsmen’s Park after 5 years. 2. HUGE $6,000,000 BULLION CARGO MARKS END OF SWEDEN’S GOLD TO U.S.: NEW YORK, NY - From the Riksbanken of Stockholm, the only bank in the country permitted to export the precious metal, comes the final shipment to the Federal Reserve here. Heavily guarded by police and government officers, the rich treasure is landed in 179 little boxes, each containing $30,000. A new law prohibits even this bank from sending more gold from the Scandinavian nation. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 3. CHICAGO, IL – “Jungle” colonized in heart of city! — Light-housekeeping a specialty in Hobo Town. 4. PARIS, FRANCE - New Invention revolutionizes motoring! — And why didn’t somebody think of this before? 5. ANACOSTIA, VA - Mrs. Hoover christens world’s largest amphibian plane! — Giant craft makes auspicious debut. 6. HOMES DESERTED BY TERRIFIED NATIVES IN NEW ’QUAKE DISASTER: FUKAYA, JAPAN - The strange force of destruction strikes swiftly leaving thousands homeless, and bringing death to hundreds. Complete tragedy is averted through the miraculous lack of fire which usually follows such catastrophes. Undaunted by the terrible shock, the inhabitants search the ruins for dead and injured, as relief agencies quickly arrive at the scene with food and guides to fetch the refugees to shelter. 7. SENSATIONAL VICTORY OVER MATE FEATURES SUN BEAU’S LAST RACE: HAWTHORNE, IL - Willis Sharpe Kilmer’s thoroughbred adds $20,700 to his winnings for an all-time record of $376,744 during his turf competition, with a stirring triumph in the Gold Cup classic. Fought hard through the mile and an eighth course by the Preakness winner and Plucky Play, the track’s greatest money earner thundered down the home stretch under the skillful hand of Johnny Maiben, to nose out his rivals for the rich stake. A thrilling end to the amazing career of a remarkable horse. (LOCAL – CANADA - A) ADVERTISING MEN HOLD CLOSELY CONTESTED GOLF TOURN. (LOCAL – CANADA - B) CANADA’S NEWEST.
