Prime Minister Nehru Meets with Dalai Lama (Universal Newsreel, Apr 1959)
Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. PRIME MINISTER NEHRU MEETS WITH DALAI LAMA at the exiled God-king's sanctuary in the Indian hill town of Mussoorie. Nehru, a man slow to anger, is severe in his criticism and denunciation of the Red Chinese Communist aggression in Tibet. Recalling when Chou En-lai, then visiting New Delhi, had assured Nehru that Peiping would honor Tibet's sovereignty and would not force Communism on that little and deeply religious country. Events have proved the worthlessness of the Communist promise. For in bloody fashion Chou En-lai has broken not only the laws of humanity but his personal word to Nehru. 2A/B/C. WEST'S UNITY COMPLETE ON POLICY FOR GENEVA - At Paris, Western Foreign Ministers end their pre-Summit consultations with complete agreement. The secret Western package proposal contains some Western concessions and counter-concessions that the West expects of the Soviet Union. The Geneva meeting opens May 11. Western accord was reached without any wrangling. Nothing left up in the air. Everything's now on paper. / PROJECT MERCURY NOSE CONE - At a Virginia testing ground–a full-scale model of the capsule that will carry America's first spaceman into orbit is rocketed aloft to test the parachute mechanism that is to return it safely back to earth. / EYES TO THE SKY AGAIN - For Hawaii's 50th Anniversary celebration of the China Clipper's first trans-pacific flight. Back in 1935. 50,000 flights later–the hop is now routine. Here we see the first scheduled flight. 3. FASHION FUN - In the Netherlands Antilles–models display some versatile budget buys–that can amplify a gal's wardrobe. Made possible by a many-splendored new synthetic material. Producing housecoats and even bare bikinis, as well as dresses, etc. 4. CHILDREN'S HOUR AT CANADIAN ZOO - With Mr. Penguin acting as host. He is in "formal attire" and lends dignity to the occasion. His guests include Cubs, Kittens, Baby Monkeys–all having a wonderful time in a mirthful mélange of merriment.
