Shooting started after followers of the Dalai Lama, who is a symbol of national unity as well as the spiritual leader of the Tibetans, had staged a number of anti-Chinese demonstrations in the streets and squares of the ancient capital. Dalai Lama's whereabouts are unknown. He's said to be injured but still leading rebel forces in the South. Red China, by decree has stripped him of political power.
