President Eisenhower and Queen Elizabeth in Gala Seaway Opening (Universal Newsreel, Jun 1959)
Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. PRESIDENT EISENHOWER AND QUEEN ELIZABETH IN GALA SEAWAY OPENING - After a festive formal ball presenting Montreal at its most scintillating, Queen Elizabeth is joined on the Royal Yacht Brittania by President Eisenhower for a gala international ceremony formally opening the St. Lawrence seaway, an historic occasion observed with ceremonial splendor and nautical enthusiasm. 2A/B/C. 68 DIE IN ITALY AIR DISASTER - All aboard an America-bound airliner die within minutes of take-off from Milan when the giant craft, flying through a violent thunderstorm, breaks up and burns in mid-air. Firemen can do no more than douse the flames and remove the bodies. / NEW LANDING LIGHTS - At Dow Air Force Base, Maine, the Air Force tests a new all-weather landing system, using high-intensity "Narrow Gauge" lights to identify the runway for a test jet coming down in dense fog! The result a perfect, on-the-beam approach. / POPE JOHN XXIII AND PRESIDENT DE GAULLE - A warm and gratifying finale to French President Charles De Gaulle's successful State visit to Italy comes at the Vatican where, after a welcome of traditional pomp and ceremony, he enjoys a cordial audience with the Pontiff. 3. RED FAIR OPENS IN NEW YORK - The Soviet Exhibition of Science, Technology and Culture opens in the Coliseum, an impressive panorama of Soviet advances in many fields topped off by scale models of the Red space satellites. Frol R. Kozlov, number 3 man in the Kremlin, flies in, setting a non-stop record from Moscow, aboard a new Soviet turbo-prop, the world's largest commercial airliner. Climaxing the eventful day is an impromptu visit by president Eisenhower to greet Kozlov and see the show.
