Algeria Aflame (Universal Newsreel, Dec 1960)
Description
The original release sheet reads: ALGERIA AFLAME President DeGaulle’s visit to Algeria, to rally support for a referendum, is the spark for explosive rioting by die-hard French settlers, who clash with troops in fierce duels in which Molotov cocktails and tear gas bombs are exchanged. The Army stays loyal to the Government, and puts down the riots, in which a shocking death toll leaves Algeria briefly quiet again, with an ominous stillness that portends renewed violence. BLIZZARD OF 1960 Lulled by predictions of a mild winter, the Eastern United States is ill-prepared to have the roof fall in with a 20-hour snowstorm that pours down nearly two feet in New York, a record fall that completely snarls the metropolitan area, shutting down all schools, and cutting off thousands of commuters from the city. GLIMPSE OF KENNEDY BABY Outside the Kennedy’s Georgetown house, a hopeful crowd waits through sub-freezing weather for a glimpse of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Jr. As the President-elect and his wife leave for Palm Beach, the baby is whisked by, heavily swaddled against the cold. POPE JOHN PRAYS IN ROME Pope John XXIII goes forth from the Vatican among the people of Rome on the occasion of a celebration of the Immaculate Conception. It’s the Pontiff’s 68th visit outside the Vatican in his two years’ reign. LONDON OVATION FOR “SPARTACUS” The overseas premiere of U-I’s film epic “Spartacus” is the highlight of London’s show business calendar for 1960, a glittering event at which the roster of notables is headed by Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones, and includes Mrs. Pandit, Indian High Commissioner, and many other famous figures of society, politics, and the entertainment world, as well as Kirk Douglas, producer and star of “Spartacus,” director Stanley Kubrick, and U-I President Milton Rackmil.
