Ike’s Hemisphere Tour (Universal Newsreel, Feb 1960)

Description

The original release sheet reads: IKE’S HEMISPHERE TOUR President Eisenhower carries his historic peace crusade into Latin-America, arriving in the modernistic Capital city of Brazil, Brasilia, still under construction, to be greeted by President Kubitschek, and receive the acclaim of thousands in the strange wilderness city. Despite occasional mishaps, Ike’s 3-day visit to South America’s largest nation is a resounding popular triumph. JAPAN HAILS IMPERIAL PRINCE All Japan rejoices as news is flashed of the brith of a son, second in the direct line of Imperial succession, to Crown Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko. FORMOSA PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN In Formosa, the over 1400-man National Assembly debates the choice of successor to President Chiang Kai Shek, and weighs suspending the constitutional bar to Chiang's succeeding himself again. VIAREGGIO CARNIVAL Viareggio's traditional Carnival parade in its 1960 edition is more grand, garish, gargantuan, and gala than ever, with enormous and witty animated lamppons of tropical figures, including the "big four" looming over the merry-making that whirls through the streets. DESIGN AWARDS The New York Couture Group, composed of America's leading high fashion designers, presents members' collections for Spring, in an important first showing, and also honors examples of stylistic excellence outside the field of apparel. CAROL HEISS BRINGS U.S. FIRST OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL At Squaw Valley, California, 20-year-old Carol Heiss of Queens, New York, gives a superb performance in the figure skating event, triumphing with a wide margin to bring America its first Gold Medal in the 1960 International Contest.
