Weather-Eye Satellite in Orbit (Universal Newsreel, Apr 1960)

Description

The original release sheet reads: WEATHER-EYE SATELLITE IN ORBIT "TIROS," the first weather satellite, is placed in orbite from Cape Canaveral. Its cameras record and broadcast back the first systematic view of the earth's weather over continent-wide ranges, marking a gigantic stride for the science of weather study. Remarkable animation films graphically depict how TIROS performs its historic mission. FRENCH TEST SECOND A-BOMB On the Sahara, France tests her second A-Bomb, and shows enormous technical strides thanks to the lessons learned from her first. The fiery mushroom cloud marks another stride by France towards equality in the "nuclear club." POPE ELEVATES NEW CARDINALS In solemn rites in St. Peter's Basilica, Pope John XXIII completes the elevation to the red hat of the new Cardinals who swell the ranks of the Sacred College to its greatest number in modern times. Among them are the first Japanese and the first native African Cardinal. CULINARY ART TEMPTS CALORIE COUNTERS In Toronto, 12,000 delegates to a national restaurant convention see a tempting, tantalizing array of culinary wizardry that would send a waist-line watcher into a tantrum of frustration. Working in goodies such as lobster, ham and pure candy sugar, the sorcerers of the kitchen recreate even the Taj Mahal. BALLY ACHE WINS FLORIDA DERBY Bally Ache moves into top contender's position for the Kentucky Derby with a thrilling vicotry at Gulfstream in the $120,000 Florida Derby, edging Venetian Way by a nose after a sensational mile and a quarter duel.
