First Recovery of Capsule From Orbit (Universal Newsreel, Aug 1960)
Description
The original release sheet reads: FIRST RECOVERY OF CAPSULE FROM ORBIT A series of major accomplishments in quick succession for U.S. spacemen. After the successful launching of the Discoverer XIII the satellite orbits 17 times, then releases a payload capsule which is recovered from the Pacific three hours later. The first time in history any object has been successfully recovered from an orbit in outer space. ECHO BALLOON RELAYS VOICES FROM SPACE A three-stage Thor Delta rocket carries into orbit from Cape Canaveral a unique satellite Echo I, a 100 foot balloon, which opens a new era in global communication. The giant balloon acts as a radio mirror, bouncing long-range messages from Earth off its surface. ROCKET PILOT REACHES HIGHEST ALTITUDE Major Robert M. White pilots the X-15 rocket plane to the greatest altitude ever attained by man, nearly 25 miles over Edwards Air Force Base, California – to the very threshold of space. A series of achievements that mark spectacular gains by America in the race into space. SPORTS COLTS DOWN COLLEGE GRID STARS At Soldiers Field, Chicago, the 27th annual pre-season grid outing by the College All-Stars against the N.F.L. champion Baltimore Colts. Sparked by the red-hot passing of Johnny Unitas, the Colts gallop to a 32-7 triumph, with the collegians sole tally coming on a brilliant 60-yard run by Prentice Gautt. SILVER SONG WINS AMERICAN TROTTING CHAMPIONSHIP Roosevelt Raceway’s biggest crowd of the season sees Silver Song win the $25,000 purse and the right to carry Old Glory in the International Trot in a thrilling, down-to-the-wire stretch duel with Streamin’ Demon, who shifts into a pace in the stretch, but is outpaced anyhow by Silver Song.
