Eight communities are evacuated in the face of surging local rivers, swollen by days of continuous rainfall. At least 8 are known dead, and damages mount into the millions of Francs. “SPARTACUS” Premiere: In New York, the world premiere of U-I’s 12 million dollar spectacle, “SPARTACUS,” is one of the Great White Way’s most glittering events, with a host of notables of the entertainment world on hand. FOOTBALL ARMY LOSES TO PENN STATE At West Point, Penn State hands the Cadets their first defeat of the season, by a final upset score of 27-16. Three touchdowns by Jim Kerr turns the trick for the Nittany Lions, who come from behind with unexpected toughness. OHIO STATE CRUSHES ILLINOIS At Champaign, Illinois, the Buckeyes of Ohio State give a powerhouse performance against the Illini, highlighted by the bull-like charges of Bob Ferguson and a 102-yard scoring runback by Bill Wentz, for a final tally of 34-7. WORLD SERIES HIGHLIGHTS Highlights of the World Series. In the third game, the Yankees follow up their 16-3 crusher with another scoring spree, with Bobby Richardson blasting out a grand slam home run, and going on to set a new series record for runs batted in. Next day – the spunky Pirates shake off the effects of two resounding defeats and fight to a 3-2 victory, on the strength of Vernon Law’s pitching and a brilliant catch by Bill Virdon that chokes off a New York rally.
