Description

The original release sheet reads: TOLL CLIMBS IN CALIFORNIA FIRE DISASTER The worst fire in Southern California history rages through the foothills in the Bel-Air and Brentwood districts of Los Angeles County. The blaze raced with incredible swiftness through the brush-choked canyons and destroyed more than 750 homes. Many were in the $100,000 class and owned by movie luminaries. Damage in the 14,000 acre fire is estimated at upwards of $20,000,000. DEMOCRATS WIN IN KEY ELECTIONS Mayor Robert F. Wagner is re-elected Mayor of New York City and emerges as a power in the Democratic party. Bucking Tammany and state party leaders he won handily, while in New Jersey, the dark horse Democratic candidate for Governor, Richard J. Hughes, upset the Republican candidate, former Labor Secretary James P. Mitchell. WHITE HOUSE SPOTLIGHT The White House is the scene of some of the most important talks the President has ever held with a foreign leader - those with Prime Minister Nehru of India. They confer during an informal stroll around the White House grounds. Mrs. Kennedy is also in the spotlight as she buys the first Christmas Seals to fight epidemic diseases. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO Henry Ford, famed motor magnate, went back to school at his reconstructed village where his boyhood school was rebuilt. The man who made the FBI famous, J. Edgar Hoover, received one of innumerable citations - this one from the Boy Scouts. Secretary of State Cordell Hull sailed for South America and a peace conference. He was in office at the time of Pearl Harbor. The Papal Secretary of State, Eugenio Cardinal Pacelli visited the United States. He later became Pope Pius XII. A reporter named Dorothy Kilgallen raced around the world on scheduled airlines. She made it in 24 days, but a rival made it in 18. Every era has its fads and fancies - 25 years ago it was painted stockings and the girls had themselves out on a limb - or two.
