Description

The original release sheet reads: BILLION DOLLAR FIRE: FIGHT TO CONTROL SAHARA GAS BLAZE For 12 weeks a 450-foot pillar of fire has raged out of control - a well in the natural gas fields of Gassi Touil in the French Sahara. Now a U.S. team of troubleshooters is attempting to cap the flames - - - for a fee of several million dollars. AMPHIBIOUS HELICOPTER IN DEBUT The Coast Guard unveils a new rescue craft - the "Sikorsky S-62" a whirly-bird that can land at sea and pick up downed fliers five times as fast as conventional craft. NEWSPAPERMAN TURNED ACTOR IN DEBUT Vice-President Lyndon Johnson and members of the National Press Club greet Arthur Christiansen, for 25 years Editor of the London Daily Express, who plays (what else!) an Editor in UNIVERSAL - INTERNATIONAL'S sensational picture: "THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE." SPORTS IT'S A YOUNG MAN'S WORLD IN FIGURE SKATING The contestant who cuts a fancy figure at the National FIgure Skating Championships is a 12-year-old, Scott Allen. He finishes second to an old man, 17-year-old, Monty Hoyt. Mrs. Barbara Roles Pursley wins the Women's Title, making a comeback after two years in retirement. RECORDS FALL AT INDOOR TRACK MEET The climax to a thrill-packed night at the Millrose Games in New York is the new pole-vault mark made by John Uelses. He's the first man to break the 16-foot barrier as he sails over the cross-bar at 16 feet, 1/4 inches. There's a new shot-put record, also, and Frank Budd and Hayes Jones win the dashes - - - as usual!
