Highlights of Gop Convention (Universal Newsreel, Jul 1964)

Description

The original release sheet reads: HIGHLIGHTS OF GOP CONVENTION Senator Barry Goldwater takes a walk through San Francisco and he appears heading for the Republican nomination on the first ballot. He appears confident as he addresses the platform committee and calls for a tougher stand with the red bloc and less government at home. Fighting a rear-guard action to the end are the forces of Governor William Scranton. On the eve of the convention, 40,000 civil rights demonstrators mass in protest against Goldwater. Governor Mark O. Hatfield of Oregon gives Universal Newsreel the high lights of his keynote address. AROUND THE CORNER-AUTUMN HATS Designers in Germany unveil their fall hats, though summer has barely made its debut. They call for simplicity in milady's headgear--and that's news in itself. HITCHCOCK PRESENTS-- The famed director, Alfred Hitchcock, joins his friend, Australian philanthropist Sir Edward Hallstrom to present two rare albino kangaroos to the Los Angeles Zoo. Mr. Hitchcock has a new hit "MARNIE" on his hands --maybe that's why the kangaroos jump for joy. SPORTS WATER SKIING A LA MOSELLE There is water skiing and there's the version they stage on Germany's Moselle River. In 20 second runs the contestants go through all sorts of stunts behind their speeding tow boats. We must report no one was hurt-none of these daring young men on the flying trick skiis.
