Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. EASTMAN SETS NEW WORLD TRACK RECORD; RUNS ½-MILE IN 1:51.3: PALO ALTO, CA - For the second time in a fortnight, the Leland Stanford U. speed merchant climbs the pinnacle of fame under the drive of his flashing feet. Running against the class of the cinder path on the Pacific Coast in a meet featuring Olympic Club and San Francisco University stars, the latest sensation of the track pounds around the oval at a terrific pace, amazing the spectators and confounding his competitors. The spectacular victory is added two weeks after he had clipped a full second from the ¼-mile mark. A new star is rising on the horizon to garner international Olympic laurels. 2. COUNTRYSIDE UNITES TO COMBAT PERIL OF RISING FLOOD WATERS: HARTFORD, CT - Rain-swelled streams emptying into the Connecticut River threaten to flood it beyond the freshet stage, and hundreds of communities along its banks take precautionary measures against the menace. Cattle are driven from meadows inundated in the first over-flowing of the banks, and the southern section of the city takes to row-boats as a means of transportation. Good fortune smiles on this vicinity, though, in the cloak of a chilly snap that bid fair to stem the embryo flood. 3. GHETTO IN BEE-HIVE OF ACTIVITY ON EVE OF PASSOVER FETE: NEW YORK, NY - Alive with busy purchasers the push-cart lined streets of the East Side hum through preparations for the great feast commemorating the Exodus from Egypt. Gaiety and bargain-hunting mark these picturesque scenes as the more fortunate Israelites select stores and provisions for the great festival. Jewish charitable agencies succor the impoverished Orthodox faithful and supply them with matzos, the unleavened bread that must be eaten during the 7-day period of the festival. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 4. ARMY’S EPIC FIGHT SAVES RIVER TRAFFIC FROM RUIN BY OCEAN: FORT STEVENS, OR - Fearless workers toiling at top speed battle against the thunderous seas that have worn away the jetty protecting the mouth of the mighty Columbia. Racing against time the job must be completed before the sands, washing in from the ocean, dam up the harbor, cutting Portland off from a water approach. To meet the requirements specially blasted rock is hauled here from a quarry at Camas, WA. Employing caterpillars, pile drivers, and great daring the men do double-time constructing the wall of rocks averaging 20 tons each in size. The gigantic project will stretch 7 miles out to sea. More than 10,000,000 tons of stone will be required to save the stream from being closed to navigation. 7. LINDY TOT STILL HELD DESPITE PAYMENT OF $50,000 IN RANSOM CASH: CUTTYHUNK, MA - The most sensational kidnapping in the country’s history continues to baffle the police of the world as the soul-stirring manhunt goes on, surrounded by mystery and marked by despicable chicanery. In supposed dealings with the criminals Colonel Lindbergh has surrendered vast sums through Dr. John F. Condon, his authorized negotiator. Investigators move on relentlessly and tirelessly as the shifting search touches this desolate spot on the New England coast where Lindbergh attempts a tryst with the kidnapers. And meanwhile the prostrate mother waits at the mountain retreat of the Lone Eagle, snatching at every thread of hope for the life of her 22-month old son. CHICAGO, IL - Thomas Marshall, Jr., noted scientist demonstrates his new Invisible-Ray device to foil would-be kidnapers. Exclusive pictures of the most sensational invention that modern criminology has devised to combat the latest form of underworld depredation.
