Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. BATTLE GLACIER ICE TO SALVAGE FAMOUS STRATOSPHERE CABIN: OBERGURGL, AUSTRIA - In preparation for a new ascension, workmen in the Tyrolean Alps struggle against heavy odds to recover the gondola of the balloon that carried Professor Auguste Piccard 50,000 feet into the mysterious ether that surrounds the earth. The compartment is retrieved after an epic fight in the snow and ice covered mountains, where drifts and frozen passes block the efforts of the brave laborers, as the coming flight is discussed at Brussels where the rescued cabin is shipped. 2. PUPILS’ HOME-MADE MARIONETTE SHOW TO AID UNEMPLOYED: NEW YORK, NY - Aiming to do their part to help jobless thousands in need of relief, students of the West Side Continuation School stage a puppet production commemorating great events in the life of George Washington. The “stringed” actors and actresses go through their paces, acting roles of characters that played important parts in the career of the first president. An audience of children jams the hall and gives the show a warm reception. Insuring it a “long run” and promising much needed assistance to the city’s poor. 3. VERTICAL AUTO PARK SOLVES PROBLEM OF WINDY CITY DRIVERS: CHICAGO, IL - Traffic jams and worn-out patience pass into the discard as motorists hail the latest development of science to make movie-going and downtown shopping a pleasure. Driving around crowded streets looking for a place to leave cars becomes a thing of the past. Skyscraper elevators 105 feet high park 48 cars in a ground space 16 by 24 feet, normally able to accommodate but 6. Cars are driven into cages on endless conveyors that rise Ferris-wheel fashion into the air. This is the first installation in the country and heralds a definite movement for relief of congestion in business centers. 4. PORTLAND, OR - Home-brewers hold tourney to decide bottle-capping king! — Winner sets new record of 9 seconds. 5. RUSH GIGANTIC JOB ON HOUSING PROJECT FOR 2,000 OLYMPIC ATHLETES: LOS ANGELES, CA - A miracle city, where 50 houses a day are erected, is being prepared to shelter the representatives of 50 nations who will compete in the 10th Olympiad this summer. Work proceeds at a terrific pace as a score-and-a-half laborers concentrate on each individual structure as the 330-acre tract of rolling valley between the Baldwin Hills is swiftly transformed into a busy community. Every 8½ minutes a new 10 x 24-foot dwelling is completed, ready for occupancy by the world’s stalwarts. 6. OLD WAR TANK FEATS THRILL SPECTATORS IN FINAL MANEUVERS: FORT MEADE, MD - Obsolete but still capable, a regiment of lumbering iron battle-wagons push over hills and valleys in their breath-taking drill. Colonel H.L. Cooper, commander of the post, reviews the detachment as they thunder through steep grades, trees, shrubs, houses, and other vain obstacles to these relentless machines of war which know no barriers. Improved field methods have made these land dreadnaughts obsolete, but in this rigid test they are established as weapons of no mean threat. 7. EX-EMPEROR OF CHINA APPOINTED REGENT OF NEW ORIENTAL STATE: CHANGCHUN, MANCHURIA - (EXCLUSIVE PICTURES!!) Henry Pu Yi, last of his great dynasty to sit upon the throne of China, is installed as boy dictator of the independent state of Manchukuo (Manchuria). His carefully guarded entrance into this city, the capital of the new republic, arouses rancor among the Nationalist leaders and his accession to office, it is feared, may result in new serious consequences in the Far East. Accompanied by Chang Hsiao-hsu, his Prime Minister and one-time tutor, the new ruler takes possession of the ruler’s palace to govern a war-torn land, and appoints his Cabinet of carefully-selected diplomats, as Japan nods approval and China voices vociferous objections.
