Ban on Beer Lifted as President Signs Bill Legalizing Brew (Universal Newsreel, Mar 1933)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. BAN ON BEER LIFTED AS PRESIDENT SIGNS BILL LEGALIZING BREW: WASHINGTON, D.C. - The nation’s 13-year fight for liberalization of the prohibition laws is crowned with victory as the Chief Executive affixes his signature to the Cullen-Harrison bill modifying the Volstead Act to permit 3.2 percent beverages. Resulting re-awakening of the brewing industry will mean employment for one million persons. 2. JEWISH WAR “VETS” PARADE TO PROTEST NAZI PERSECUTIONS: NEW YORK, NY - A monster demonstration against Chancellor Adolf Hitler of Germany and the anti-Semitic excesses of his regime is staged by thousands of World War service men. Calling for strong pressure upon the present German leaders to cease their anti-Jewish activities, the marchers visit City Hall and enlist the support of Mayor O’Brien. 3. WINDY CITY SHIVERS AS SLEET AND FREEZE GREET GENTLE SPRING: CHICAGO, IL - A terrific ice-storm, on the eve of the Vernal Equinox, covers the streets with a treacherous glaze that paralyzes traffic and causes hundreds of accidents. In the parks, the icy foliage presents a remarkable and artistic scene. 4. HOOVER RETURNS HOME SMILING AND CONTENT AS PRIVATE CITIZEN: PALO ALTO, CA - The Ex-President gets a warm and friendly greeting from his fellow-townsmen as he arrives to take up his life where he left it to enter the political arena. Looking much younger since he turned over the problems of State to other hands, he looks forward to a much-needed rest. 5. RIVERS ON RAMPAGE AS NEW FLOOD CREST IMPERILS THOUSANDS: CINCINNATI, OH - Men, women and children, marooned in their houses or places of business, are rescued in small boats as the rising back-waters of the Ohio and its tributaries reach a new high-water mark and submerge large sections of the city. 6. MRS. ROOSEVELT OFF FOR FIRST HORSEBACK RIDE IN CAPITAL CITY: WASHINGTON, D.C. - The President’s wife loses no time getting out on the Rock Creek bridle-path, after the arrival here of “Patches,” her favorite mount. Her appearance astride the famous horse marks a new departure in recent White House customs. 7. SATURDAY NIGHT FOR JUNGLE KING BRINGS WEEKLY BEAUTY BATH: LOS ANGELES, CA - Just like a small boy, Jackie, the California Zoo’s African lion, hates to be tubbed. And woe to Melvin Koontz, the daring trainer, when he gets soap in His Majesty’s eyes. There are quite a few hectic moments in bathing a lion. The feat requires remarkable coolness and courage. 8. 1500 DEAD; 100 TOWNS WIPED OUT BY ’QUAKE, TIDAL WAVE AND FIRE: KAMAISHI, JAPAN - Appalling scenes of the wide-spread destruction in Northern Nippon, where more than 4000 men, women and children were killed, injured or are missing and where more than 12,000 dwellings were demolished by the three-fold disaster, one of the worst in the history of the Flowery Kingdom. 9. BIG LEAGUE PLAYERS GATHER FOR FRAY AS BALL SEASON STARTS: MAMARONECK, NY - With the chirp of the first robin, the sand-lot baseball teams spring into action, and the wide-open spaces between city flats bloom with future Gehrigs and Ruths. Skinned knees and broken windows add zest to the game.
