Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. GOV. WARREN TO HEAD U.S. SUPREME COURT - California’s Governor Earl Warren is appointed Chief Justice of the United States. The 14th man in our history to occupy the nation’s top judicial post, he’ll preside over history-making decisions by the highest tribunal in coming months. 2A/B/C/D/E. RUSSIA FREES GERMAN POW’S: GERMANY - After ten years, a contingent of 468 men, women, and children return from Russian captivity. Though 250,000 remain in slave camps, heart-warming reunions temporarily erase any bitterness. / SEN. MCCARTHY MARRIES: WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Capital’s top social event is the wedding of Sen. McCarthy and Jean Kerr, a former aide and one-time University beauty queen. Notables include Vice-President Nixon and Jack Dempsey. / TYPHOON RAVAGES JAPAN: JAPAN - Thousands are homeless in flooded areas in the wake of typhoon “Tess.” An estimated 115 died in Japan, plus a thousand in Indo-China due to record winds which inflicted vast damage. / SAFETY STEERING WHEEL: FRANCE - French engineers show a newly devised steering wheel designed to eliminate a common cause of injures in abrupt stops. A test driver risks his ribs in full speed crashes—but comes out upright and undamaged. / TRUCKING BY RAIL: ILLINOIS - Newly devised flatcars and loading methods make it possible to ship truck semi-trailers by rail over long hauls. “Piggy-back trucking” may clear the highways while increasing trucker’s and railroad revenue. 3. YANKEES WIN SERIES OPENER, TOP DODGERS 9-5: NEW YORK - In the first game of the World Series, the New York Yankees outslug Brooklyn to take the first game. In the 7th inning, Joe Collins breaks a 5-5 tie with a four-bagger, and from there on, clear sailing for the Yankees.
