U.N. Considers Katanga Crisis (Universal Newsreel, Aug 1960)

Description

The original release sheet reads: U.N. CONSIDERS KATANGA CRISIS At U.N. Headquarters in New York, Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold calls for a resolution for speedy withdrawal of Belgian troops from Katanga and a promise of non-interference in the Congo’s internal affairs. Nevertheless, Katanga is very much in the international picture. PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFULS TAKE SPOTLIGHT President Eisenhower admonishes the Senate to set politics aside to complete important legislation, but it will be very difficult to forget the Presidential campaign with Senator Kennedy and Vice-President Nixon sitting in the extra session. CASTRO BLASTS U.S. AGAIN Premier Castro makes an appearance before the Pan-American Youth Congress in Havana and announces the seizure of three quarters of a billion dollars of U.S. property in Cuba. Though ailing, Premier Castro is still an imposing figure in the cold war. BEAUTIES ON PARADE A sight for sore eyes as the International Beauty Congress gets underway in Long Beach, California with a pageant of loveliness from every corner of the world. SPORTS BRAZIL TAKES SOCCER TITLE At the Polo grounds in New York, Bangu of Brazil does some fancy footwork against Kilmarnock of Scotland to win the American Cup Playoff in the International Soccer League, two to nothing. FAVORITE TAKES 5TH STAKES A finish as close as they come at Monmouth Park, New Jersey, as the favorite, “Hail to Reason,” beats a long shot under the wire.
